Harry Styles and qigong

Go to 15 minutes, 14 seconds in this YouTube video to see Harry Styles doing what I’m sure is qigong. It very much looks like the ex-One Direction singer was trying to ground himself with some deep breathing and movement, as we often do in our qigong practise.

Styles isn’t the first celebrity into qigong, even though most of his fans probably wouldn’t know what he was doing. But, it always gives me a flicker of excitement when high profile people appear to be interested in qigong because it makes me hopeful that more folk will find the absolute joy and pure calm that can be found through it.

This ancient art brings me into stillness and connection with myself in a way that nothing else does. I was also really happy to see the leader of Hong Kong, John Lee, also talked about the powers of qigong this week. In this article, Lee says he recovers his energy more through qigong than through sleep. What a great advert for qigong and its energy restoring abilities.

The piece, which can be found inside the South China Morning Post, said that Lee has practised qigong for more than two decades, and that he was ““very conscious” of the need to maintain his health as he needed it – and a fresh mind – “to do things that are of importance for society”.”

Do you feel inspired to join Styles and Lee (probably not in person!)? You can message me to join my Wednesday online class!

Wellbeing blog

September qigong and wellbeing

Hi everyone Before I start, if you haven’t seen it – check out this article from last week’s Guardian. It’s a big vote for tai chi, and qigong (which has loads of the benefits of more traditional tai chi). So, we’re already more than halfway way through the Late Summer season in the Five Element…

Coping with Heat: Nurturing Heart and Mind

My mum texted me the other day to say there was a fire near the valley I’m from in South Wales. Smoke was billowing into the town, something we’ve never seen before. It’s normally a bit cooler and wetter in Wales, but here in the UK, 2026 looks likely to be the hottest year in…

Spring wellbeing according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

We’ve been practising spring wellbeing movements for liver and gallbladder for a month in Wednesday’s seasonal online practise. But as the clocks have gone forward in the UK and so many vibrants shades of green are springing up, I thought I’d post some wellbeing ideas for nurturing your Wood element. Wood element is connected to…

Spring seasonal qigong reflections

In spring seasonal qigong (Wednesdays online 12pm) we’ve been spending some extra time ‘rooting’ in our practise and in our bodies. Everything feels so much more manageable when we feel rooted. I really notice this. When I give my feet extra focus, take more moments to feel the weight of my feet on the floor,…

Why I began doing qigong, and why I keep doing it.

Learning qigong happened by accident. Living a fast-paced life as a freelance journalist, the lack of work-life balance began to show as I approached my mid-30s and various issues started to surface. I was desperate for some time out from the hecticness of life and took a low-cost silent meditation retreat in Wales, purely to…

Spring 2026 tea meditation, Brighton

Tea meditation, 21 Feb 2025 My heart is full after getting together with a wonderful group of qigongers and meditators for spring tea meditation to celebrate Chinese new year. We sat together at a great new accessible and inclusive venue near Brighton train station, appropriately called Gather. There were plenty of comfortable cushions and blankets…
